I Feel Most Comfortable In My Skin When…

I’d be lying if I didn’t admit that I’m most comfortable in my skin when I’m at my performing weight. What can I say? I’m a product of a culture and a career that celebrates specific beauty ideals. I’ve been conditioned to believe that my appearance determines my worth. That my skills and talents can be overshadowed by an appearance that doesn’t match society’s standard. Those thoughts are embedded in my subconscious but the critical voices are loud and on auto-loop. I’m not proud of it but, yes, I’d be much more comfortable in my skin if I were at my “ideal weight”. That being said, age and experience have taught me to give far less f**ks about my size and weight. When I shove my ego out of the way, I know there are more important things to focus on; like my health, mobility, relationships, joy, and purpose.

What I do care about is standing powerfully in my authentic self no matter how I present physically or how the world might perceive me. I feel most comfortable in my skin when I follow my passions, interests and curiosities; independent of “group think”, who’s popular or whatever’s trending. To me, confidence comes from operating with honesty and integrity; with myself and others. It comes from self-awareness, stepping into my purpose and always being open to possibility. It’s knowing I’m surrounded by my small tribe that I have mad love and respect for; personally and professionally. Knowing I’ve attracted them into my life feels I’m doing something right. And that makes me feel comfortable in my skin.

S.I.T. With Yourself in April

This month’s #soakedinthought journaling prompts are dedicated to body confidence and fitness as a lifestyle. As we move into Spring and the fitness industry ramps up its messaging about getting “in shape” for Summer, I hope you’ll sit with yourself to figure out what your body, mind, and spirit need to feel healthy, fit, and happy – without all the external voices.
