I Prefer Gym/Home Workouts Because…

I prefer gym (Pilates studio) workouts but the pandemic has gotten me accustomed to training virtually at home. I love going into a Pilates studio for private lessons because it has all the equipment I can’t fit into my apartment but is integral to the Pilates Method of training. When lockdown began, all I owned was a Gratz Low Folding Mat, a Spine Corrector and some small props.  And I felt so lucky! I did the Return To Life Matwork series 6 days/week and couldn’t believe how strong I got. Those 34 exercises ain’t no joke when it comes to delivering a sweaty, heart-pumping, full-body workout; especially when done in 34min. It really reinforced the value of intentional exercise, repetition, and moving your joints through their full range of motion. When I eventually added a Wunda Chair and Pedi Pole to my home studio, the spring resistance was a welcome shock to my system and a reminder of why “working the springs” is such a big part of the Pilates Method.

When I finally returned to the Pilates studio and got on the Reformer and Cadillac, for example, the depth of genius behind this comprehensive exercise system reverberated throughout my entire body. It’s as if I’d forgotten what I was missing. All of the exercises across each piece of apparatus are so deeply integrated with one another. And while each apparatus delivers massive value, as a cohesive system, they accelerate the learning process and help me get stronger faster.

I also prefer private lessons in a Pilates studio for the 3D, hands-on experience. Yes, I’ve had incredible virtual training since March 2020 and my practice has grown immeasurably even through a screen. I happen to have great teachers.  But live sessions offer my teachers a full view of the way I move through space. It’s easier to spot the nuances and provide tactile cues which not only feel grounding and supportive but sometimes provide more information than verbal cues.

S.I.T. With Yourself in April

This month’s #soakedinthought journaling prompts are dedicated to body confidence and fitness as a lifestyle. As we move into Spring and the fitness industry ramps up its messaging about getting “in shape” for Summer, I hope you’ll sit with yourself to figure out what your body, mind, and spirit need to feel healthy, fit, and happy – without all the external voices.
