S.I.T. Day 16: A Community of Women

In 2022 I’d like to experience a LIVE COMMUNITY of driven, passionate, woman-identifying entrepreneurs who are committed to building their businesses, serving their communities, and building each other up. Will that ever happen again? It just feels so motivating to be in the presence of like-minded women who exchange ideas, insights, and expertise. And to know you’ve got other women in your corner to help you problem-solve or to support you with their own unique skills, perspectives and backgrounds. And it feels equally good to pay it forward.

My first experience with this was Ladies Who Launch, way back when I lived in Los Angeles. Within the larger organization of entrepreneurs were small business incubators with mentors like Sarah Shaw and Jen Sincero. Thanks to them and the support of my incubator group I launched Joe’s Pila-T-Shop, a Pilates t-shirt company. Every single part of launching that business felt unfamiliar except for folding t-shirts & counting inventory, because one of my first jobs as a teen was at Benetton #IYKYK. But I wasn’t alone in the trenches of wholesale & retail online sales, marketing, sourcing vendors, packaging, blogging, or setting up convention booths. I was surrounded by “anything is possible” and “I got your back” kind of energy that carried me through my journey.

Later, I did Marie Forleo’s B-School which was also awesome. But it felt far less personal because it was a virtual program with a massive on-line community. I definitely learned a lot and made some helpful connections but, massive on-line communities lack the personal connection I crave. So, right before Covid sent NYC and the rest of the world into lockdown, I joined a community of Black NYC business owners who also share a love of the arts. We attended Black-led events and supported local Black-owned businesses. The Founder’s ultimate goal of opening a physical co-working and event space was totally derailed by the pandemic and we all retreated to our corners of the city and our virtual spaces.

And so I’m putting it out into the Universe that somehow, in the midst of this dern global pandemic, that I can connect and build friendships with like-minded women while building our businesses. A group of women that’s equally invested in each other’s success.
