I’m alive. I’m healthy. I have freedoms, privileges and hope that many in the world don’t. I have treasured friends and family, a career that I love and a comfortable home in my favorite NYC neighborhood. I get to live curiously and passionately and I take absolutely none of that for granted; especially when juxtaposed against the pain, trauma and suffering experienced throughout the world. None of this is owed to me and none of it is promised. So while I do possess this rare sense of peace and possibility, I ask to be guided to use it well. - [How to Eliminate Pilates Teacher Insecurities](https://kiralamb.com/how-to-eliminate-pilates-teacher-insecurities/) - We all start our Pilates careers with our own unique fears and insecurities based on personal life experiences. Added to that is the anxiety around: Will I remember… what to teach & how to teach it correctly? the spring settings? safety precautions? exercise contraindications for specific conditions? the number of repetitions for each exercise? exercise modifications? appropriate exercise progressions? … all while maintaining a confident exterior as nerves buzz relentlessly throughout our bodies. Being a new Pilates teacher is absolutely overwhelming. - [When Life Gives Me Lemons I...](https://kiralamb.com/when-life-gives-me-lemons-i/) - When life hands me lemons I… don’t always make lemonade. I sometimes let them sour my thoughts. And then I surrender to a downward spiral where I indulge in negative mental chatter, self-pity and self-loathing. That inevitably leads to an indulgence in Grub Hub deliveries, chocolate chip cookies and mindless television. Plus, long scrolls across social media where world news and commentary by total strangers fuels my rage and anxiety. - [Teach the Human, Not the Body](https://kiralamb.com/teach-the-human-not-the-body/) - Our students are more than just bodies that we dictate orders to or try to "fix". They are human beings with their own unique personalities, learning styles, goals, strengths, weaknesses, feelings, emotions, and insecurities. To be a student is to be vulnerable. So, as Pilates teachers, it’s highly valuable to regularly evaluate the learning environment we’re creating and to find ways to make it feel more welcoming and safe. That’s just as important as the exercises themselves. - [My Superpower is...](https://kiralamb.com/my-superpower-is/) - This Gemini wields a dual superpower of movement and stillness which, I guess, matches my extroverted-introvert personality. When those powers coalesce I'm imbued with an invaluable sense of connection to myself and others. Stillness is my sacred alone time where copal and candles burn. In this space, gravity bears no weight on my mind. Instead, it flies free as I wander through fleeting thoughts, wade through memories, daydream about my future and pour into my journals. Stillness is where I conjure ideas, visualize life as I want to live it, and contemplate the person I want to become; personally & professionally. - [How To Avoid Burnout As a Pilates Teacher](https://kiralamb.com/how-to-avoid-burnout-as-a-pilates-teacher/) - Before becoming a Pilates teacher, you were a student of the Method. Not a casual student, but an obsessed one. After all, you discovered how Pilates makes you feel more connected to your body, the way it moves and its potential for movement. It was exciting to realize that you could feel like an athlete at any age, weight, shape or size; even if you had no prior exercise experience. And if you had previous pain or injuries, Pilates may have accelerated your healing and helped you to recover. Whatever unique transformation you experienced from having a consistent Pilates practice, that’s what inspired you to become a Pilates Teacher! - [My Inner-Child Wants Me To...](https://kiralamb.com/my-inner-child-wants-me-to/) - My inner-child wants me to reclaim her. For the last six months she’s been trying to break-free from a time-out I subconsciously imposed. I guess I was keeping her hidden to protect her sensitive little spirit, and lost track of the years. But with my inner-child out of sight and out of mind, I was simply going through the motions of living. And without that playful, vulnerable and fearless little dreamer by my side, my life's choices became shaped by feelings of lack, past hurts and rejection. - [How to Do Pilates Right](https://kiralamb.com/how-to-do-pilates-right/) - When done “right” you’ll progressively build full-body strength for optimal physical function and ease of movement. You’ll feel physically and mentally empowered which will, in turn, have a profound impact on all of your daily lifestyle activities. That type of transformation requires breaking old postural and movement habits and building new ones. So when you’re doing Pilates “right” your workouts will consist of purpose-driven, full-body exercises that revolve around progressive skill-building. - [In 2023 I learned...](https://kiralamb.com/in-2023-i-learned/) - As society becomes increasingly polarized on socio-politico-economic issues, I have to pause, breathe deeply and maybe disengage before allowing myself to react versus responding thoughtfully, if that’s what I choose. And even more so when I’m triggered and can feel my emotions churn heatedly inside my gut. Or as I hear the words sharpening in my mind ready to lash out into cyberspace, which has become the acceptable norm for “communication”. But I’ve seen and experienced that it accomplishes nothing; neither for me personally nor for the greater good. - [#1 Requirement for feeling good in 2024](https://kiralamb.com/1-requirement-for-feeling-good-in-2024/) - Something that inspires me is Joseph Pilates’ philosophy about fitness. He believed that “physical fitness is the first requisite to happiness”. Yes, happiness! And he designed his exercise system of Contrology, aka The Pilates Method, for the “complete coordination of body, mind and spirit”. What a contrast to the fitness industry that wants you to believe that the goal of exercise is limited to weight loss or trying to look like the “hottest” celebrities and fitness influencers. I prefer Joseph Pilates’ holistic approach to fitness because it’s far easier to make exercise a lifestyle habit when your primary goal is to feel good so that you can live your life to the fullest! - [My theme word for 2024 is...](https://kiralamb.com/my-theme-word-for-2024-is/) - After years of repeating this pattern, I’ve finally figured out why my dreams don’t hold my attention like they should. I subconsciously invest in low-stakes projects that I’ll most likely excel at. Such projects generally make me feel valued, productive and even “successful”; at least in the eyes of others. And if I do fail, at least it doesn’t destroy my ego because my ego isn’t fully invested in it. - [To manifest my dreams means...](https://kiralamb.com/to-manifest-my-dreams-means/) - To manifest my dreams means to actively define them, envision them and experience them on an emotional level before even achieving them. It’s defying the self-doubt and embracing an “I can” mentality knowing that I deserve whatever I can imagine. The hard part is accepting that “manifesting” is not achieved through instant gratification. And as badly as my 52yo ass wants to wriggle my nose for miracles to happen, I know I’ve gotta work for what I want. - [My theme word for 2023 is...](https://kiralamb.com/my-theme-word-for-2023-is/) - My theme word for 2023 is “fulfilled”. That word makes me pause and remember that I am the one who gets to create my purpose, define my dreams and live in a way that brings me joy. - [An intangible gift that I like giving is...](https://kiralamb.com/an-intangible-gift-that-i-like-giving-is/) - An intangible gift that I like giving is best expressed by Maya Angelou, “people… will never forget the way you made them feel”. That resonates so deeply because, even through time and forgiveness, I still feel the sting of other people’s words or the weight of their behaviors and betrayals. And it’s taken so much effort to rebuild my self-esteem, dare to be vulnerable and to trust my intuition again. So it’s important to me that I'm really conscious about how I move through relationships and shared spaces. - [An intangible gift I'd like to receive is...](https://kiralamb.com/an-intangible-gift-id-like-to-receive-is/) - An intangible gift I’d like to receive is CLARITY. I’m one of those multi-passionate, adventurous dreamers that’s experienced immense joy and fulfillment on many different paths. I’m a Gemini with a Sag rising after all. So I’m curious, passionate and adaptable AF. That’s all fun and games when you’re in your early twenties and decide to ditch cult-life and leave your small hometown to become a professional dancer in NYC. - [A behavior/mindset I'm quitting is...](https://kiralamb.com/a-behavior-mindset-im-quitting-is/) - A behavior/mindset I’m quitting is my fierce independence. One of my biggest fears is to become a burden on anyone. Why should anyone else help carry the weight of what I can’t handle? Or help me solve a mess I probably created myself? Or be the sounding board for the stuff that keeps me awake with insomnia? I figure I’ve just gotta suck it up, get stronger, try harder and do better. Independence became an absolute necessity when I abruptly left my insular cult-life to move to NYC at 23yo to pursue a prohibited dance career. - [A life lesson I learned in 2022 is...](https://kiralamb.com/a-life-lesson-i-learned-in-2022-is/) - A life lesson I learned in 2022 is that "the hustle" is overrated while inner-peace is underrated. What’s important to me now is the quality of my life and the quantity of my joy. Financial success is a definite priority for me so that I can afford the lifestyle and experiences I want. But I've realized that if I’m so engaged in the pursuit of money that I don’t have time to experience my life, what’s the point? - [The greatest gift I gave myself in 2022 was...](https://kiralamb.com/the-greatest-gift-i-gave-myself-in-2022-was/) - The greatest gift I gave myself in 2022 was freedom from the hustle without labeling myself as “lazy”. The incessant need to churn out ideas & “pivot” my business while surrendering to a 2-year Covid lockdown and isolation left me feeling depleted. So in 2022, as the world opened up with possibility, I wasn’t in the mood to create new opportunities for myself. I needed to re-fill my cup and start reevaluating what I need in my life to truly feel fulfilled. My priorities included nurturing my Pilates practice, developing my teaching skills, and to, somehow, return to my first love - the arts. - [In "NO"vember, I'm saying "yes" to...](https://kiralamb.com/in-november-im-saying-yes-to/) - In "NO"vember I'm saying "yes" to the kind of clarity that'll inspire some new life decisions and motivate me to take action vs continuing to coast on auto-pilot like I have for most of 2022. It’s time to figure out which way I’d like to grow so I don’t remain stuck in status quo. The previous two years - Covid lockdown - were dedicated to career “pivoting” and social isolation which fueled my anxiety and depleted me. I was exhausted from the mental and emotional stamina it required, without the balance of real human connection. Not to mention the ever-growing socio-political polarization and racial tension that compounded my stress. - [In "NO"vember I'm saying "no" to...](https://kiralamb.com/in-november-im-saying-no-to/) - In "NO"vember I'm saying "no" to feeling sorry for myself this holiday season. The last eight weeks of the year often feel like a balled up fist of loss and loneliness and a sucker punch to the chest. I have so many empty holiday memories because of growing up in a cult that celebrated nothing. Would-be cherished times and traditions with grandparents, cousins, aunts and uncles were unfairly taken from me. My sister and I, the Lamb sisters, are truly the black sheep of the family. But at least we have each other. - [In my career I'm saying "no" to...](https://kiralamb.com/in-my-career-im-saying-no-to/) - In my career I'm saying "no" to working six days/week ever again. Or schlepping around the city between private homes, Pilates studios and Massage therapy offices to be as accommodating as possible to as many people as possible. Nope. Been there, done that. That's a business model based in fear that left me so depleted and completely envious of clients as they snored comfortably on my massage table. - [In my relationships I'm saying "no" to...](https://kiralamb.com/in-my-relationships-im-saying-no-to/) - In my relationships I'm saying "no" to red flags. But, like, really this time! Yes, I'll continue to listen with an open mind and trust with an open heart. But, from now on, I'll for damn sure observe someone's actions for their truth and trust my intuition. Someone's "potential" ain't enough for me anymore. I'm keeping a close eye on character, habits, behaviors and lifestyle. What they value. How they treat people. How they manage conflict or handle stress. - [When I say "yes" but wanna say "no" I feel...](https://kiralamb.com/when-i-say-yes-but-wanna-say-no-i-feel/) - When I say “yes” but wanna say “no” I feel an instant pang of regret. I’ve failed myself by ignoring my needs and my intuition. It’s that all too familiar pattern from my childhood that I swore I’d never repeat. It stems from being raised in an environment where love felt conditional, which created this persistent fear of disappointing others and a constant need for approval. To be self-sacrificing was considered the “righteous” thing to do. Putting myself first was considered selfish. So, I'm a recovering people-pleaser. - [When someone tells me "no" I feel...](https://kiralamb.com/when-someone-tells-me-no-i-feel/) - When someone tells me "no" my first reaction is to get all up in my feelings. Yep, I feel disappointed, butt-hurt and wonder "How could they possibly say "no" to ME!?" And then I do the psychological dance in my head which looks like a technicolor play-by-play of our most recent interactions to understand what I could've done to elicit a "no". It's crazy how a simple "no" can feel like a personal attack that sends me spiraling. - [It's hard/easy for me to say "no" because...](https://kiralamb.com/its-hard-easy-for-me-to-say-no-because/) - I wouldn't say it it's easy to say "no" but it's definitely getting easier. After decades of people-pleasing I’m finally less concerned about disappointing others than I am about disappointing myself. The heavy feelings of resentment and regret are no longer worth saying "yes" to things that aren’t in alignment with my spirit. But I was raised to put everyone else first. My religion taught me that the very definition of JOY is “Jehovah. Others. You”. In that order! I was coerced into believing that my wants, needs, goals and desires were selfish. - [The upcoming holiday season makes me feel...](https://kiralamb.com/the-upcoming-holiday-season-makes-me-feel/) - The upcoming holiday season makes me feel a mix of sadness, loneliness and even anger. I mean, the holidays themselves are no big deal to me. But I’m already experiencing the anticipatory grief of feeling disconnected from my family and the family traditions I never really had. Holiday celebrations came to a screeching halt for me when I was about six, because my mom got swept up in a cult that believed holidays were pagan and not to be celebrated. - [Ending the year with a bang looks like...](https://kiralamb.com/ending-the-year-with-a-bang-looks-like/) - Ending the year with a bang looks like reflecting on 2022 and finding gratitude even though it’s been a tough one. I feel like I’ve been living in limbo-land just waiting for some miraculous shift to happen instead of pulling up my big girl panties and creating what I want next out of life. So it’s about feeling grounded in my purpose and way more intentional about my choices; while still being open to possibility and unexpected opportunity. - [Learning a new skill makes me feel....](https://kiralamb.com/learning-a-new-skill-makes-me-feel/) - Learning a new skill makes me feel both anxious and excited. Like, am I about to discover a latent superpower or my kryptonite? Either way, if it’s movement related, I’ma go for it! In fact, the more impossible something looks and feels, the more I’m determined to figure it out. Now, I’m not as reckless with my body as I used to be. Age and injury have humbled my aspirations a bit. - [Before the end of '22, I'd like to start learning...](https://kiralamb.com/before-the-end-of-22-id-like-to-start-learning/) - Before the end of ‘22 I’d like to start learning Aerial Hoop aka Lyra. This new, artistic journey has been in my heart for years and on the calendar for weeks. It was supposed to begin today. I woke up at an ungodly hour for a Sunday and braved the NYC subway system which defied me with delays and re-routed trains. Typical weekend shit. I ended up arriving too late for them to admit me into class. Understood. So I spent the next hour commuting back to Brooklyn feeling defeated; to which I drowned my disappointment in gluten free banana pancakes smothered in strawberries and Vermont maple syrup. - [Something I've neglected this year is...](https://kiralamb.com/something-ive-neglected-this-year-is/) - Something I’ve neglected this year is that I’m first and foremost an artist. Well, this has honestly been an ongoing dilemma since my performing career ended but it’s become worse post-Covid. I can’t seem to find my way back to my former self. It’s been a real struggle to integrate my old life with my new one. I still haven’t figured out how to exist in this second career as a self-employed, full-time Pilates teacher while still nurturing the artist and performer in me. There’s a void where my inner-artist used to feel comfort at a soul level. I desperately miss creative collaboration. And I miss the process of merging great minds and talent to tell stories within the heightened atmosphere of physical theater. - [Something I've been consistent at this year is...](https://kiralamb.com/something-ive-been-consistent-at-this-year-is/) - Something I’ve been consistent at this year is Pilates. Yes, I’m a bonafide Contrology Freak™️ but, when life feels overwhelming, I tend to make up random excuses and neglect my workouts. And let’s just say, life has felt a bit overwhelming this year. #realtalk Despite my passion for Pilates, left to my own devices, I might squander my time ruminating on any and every stressor I can lament over. But, instead, I’ve leaned into my practice as a grounding ritual that boosts my mood and reminds me that I’m capable of transformation and growth. - [Something I've gotten really good at this year is...](https://kiralamb.com/something-ive-gotten-really-good-at-this-year-is/) - Even through my anxiety, one thing I’ve gotten better at this year is trusting myself & the timing of my life. Because one day I can feel like a rockstar; owning my power and living my truth. And the next day I can feel like a hopeless shit-show. While this has been a challenging year for me, I actually don't feel hopeless! - [Even through the chaos I can...](https://kiralamb.com/even-through-the-chaos-i-can/) - Even through the chaos I can maintain my focus, remember the essence of who I am and what my purpose is. I can welcome each day as a new opportunity that’s full of possibility and root that possibility in my core values. I can “be the change” - in my own small way - even if it feels insignificant. And while trying to contribute positively to the world, I can also find ways to manage my stress and anxiety rather than ignoring my mental health. - [My favorite mood enhancers are...](https://kiralamb.com/my-favorite-mood-enhancers-are/) - My favorite mood enhancer is - hands down- movement. I’ve always been active and welcoming endorphin rushes since I was a kid. Back then I was a tree climbing, kick-balling, bun-headed ballerina. As an adult, I became a professional dancer, aerial artist and Pilates teacher. But I don’t move for the feel-good hormone hits alone. I do it for the confidence boost too. Any movement practice that requires progressive skill-building through repetition, dedication and time creates an "I can" mentality. And nothing fuels my mood more than feeling like a badass. - [Inner-Peace comes from...](https://kiralamb.com/inner-peace-comes-from/) - On an intellectual level, I know that inner-peace comes from being present and breathing through each moment with a sense of gratitude. Yada-Yada-Yada-OHM! My obnoxious brain, however, is constantly overanalyzing the past and overthinking the future. I’m a Gemini with a moon in Aquarius, damnit. All that “air” compels me to scrutinize, synthesize, and probe. While my spirit craves inner-peace, my mind loves to live in hypotheticals and “what if’s”. Sometimes it’s hard to catch my breath! And it’s even harder to sleep at night. - [Dear Inner-Critic...](https://kiralamb.com/dear-inner-critic/) - Dear Inner-Critic… you are a bold faced liar. I’ve proven you wrong time and time again and yet you persist. It’s as if you want me to fail, settle for mediocrity, and live a life that’s just “meh”. Not happening! The crazy thing is, the more you insist upon belittling me and telling me I’m “not ________ enough” the more rooted in my truth I become. I know my worth and I’ve got practice with self-advocacy. I’ve been fighting for myself since I was a kid who wanted nothing more than to live my life as authentically as possible and on my own terms. - [When I'm stressed or anxious I tend to...](https://kiralamb.com/when-im-stressed-or-anxious-i-tend-to/) - When I’m stressed or anxious I tend toward sleepless nights with my mind stammering from one topic to the next. Nothing but incoherent babble interrupted by spontaneous bursts of creativity or insight that I scribble feverishly in my journal or the notes app of my iPhone. But when the wee hours hit & my eyelids refuse to get heavy, I binge-watch House Hunters International and fantasize about a new life under an entirely new identity. ⠀ - [Worry/stress/anxiety feels like...](https://kiralamb.com/worry-stress-anxiety-feels-like/) - Worry sometimes graduates to anxiety which feels like a raging fire pit in my belly and a cacophony between my ears. It's constant. It reminds me of the raw nerves I used to feel before performances. Like how it felt after barely rehearsing a new solo aerial act and performing in front of a big audience with high expectations. Before I felt ready. Before I felt worthy of having all eyes on me. - [Right now I'm worried about....](https://kiralamb.com/right-now-im-worried-about/) - Right now I’m worried about adult shit. Like, how to survive white male patriarchy and the ominous possibility of living in a dystopian society. And then there’s the day-to-day worries of being a chronically single, Black woman solopreneur living in NYC during a tenuous economy. Also, the world is on fire! Literally. This is the stuff that makes me prone to anxiety and insomnia. But somehow, I remain the positive, pro-active, glass half-full kinda chick that believes in possibility as if it were my religion. - [#soakedinthought - A Monthly Writing Ritual](https://kiralamb.com/soakedinthought-monthly-writing-ritual/) - Journal Writing As Self-Care #soakedinthought is a monthly writing ritual that accesses your innate power to create the life that you want, instead of operating on automatic pilot or being a victim of circumstance. It’s designed to reveal your deepest truths; how you feel about yourself, your relationships, your career, and your life path. - [Summer weather makes me feel...](https://kiralamb.com/summer-weather-makes-me-feel/) - Summer weather makes me feel like I’m ready to come out of hibernation and live my best life. It makes this introvert wanna be social, explore the city, meet new people and have new experiences. And if I could, I’d spend the majority of my day outside; stationing myself under a tree in Fort Greene park to teach Pilates on Zoom. In between sessions I’d indulge in one of my favorite hobbies; people-watching while making up their backstories. Or revisiting my urge to spin poi again. - [My Summer goals are...](https://kiralamb.com/my-summer-goals-are/) - My Summer goals are a combo of business and pleasure. I guess I’m always trying to balance the two. But I’m definitely taking advantage of these slower months to plan, strategize and create for Q4 & Q1. I’m finally embracing the fact that this hybrid business model of teaching virtually and in-studio is here to stay. And I'm actually kinda amped about it even though the learning curve for implementing digital systems and creating digital marketing strategies makes me wanna pull my curls out. In the end, it’s absolutely worth it. - [If I could go anywhere this Summer I'd...](https://kiralamb.com/if-i-could-go-anywhere-this-summer-id/) - If I could go anywhere this Summer I’d escape this concrete jungle and its wild life to disappear into the jungles of Costa Rica with all its natural wildlife. But I’d need land and a small compound of container homes. One would be a double decker living space featuring a rooftop deck for writing, daydreaming, sky gazing and complete stillness. Another container would be converted into a fully equipped Gratz Pilates studio ‘cause m’life can’t happen without Pilates. And of course, I’d have to have kickass internet service so I could continue training virtually with my favorite Pilates teachers. - [If I were to attend Summer school I'd study..](https://kiralamb.com/if-i-were-to-attend-summer-school-id-study/) - If I were to attend Summer school I’d study acting. Yep, ever since the days of “Fame!”, “Cosby Show” and “A Different World” I’ve secretly (or maybe not so secretly) wanted to become an actor. But because there were so few Black folks in TV & film, it didn’t seem like a dream worth fighting for. And back in the day, I always thought there were prettier and more talented Black girls out there. So I never pursued it. But I’ve always been intrigued by character development, storytelling, and artistic collaboration. - [My ideal Summer camp would offer...](https://kiralamb.com/my-ideal-summer-camp-would-offer/) - My ideal Summer camp would offer everything that brings me joy; writing, movement, and community in a beautiful outdoor setting. My day would begin by waking up in my yurt, tiny home or container home - without an alarm. Sitting beneath a canopy of trees while sipping hot cacao from my favorite mug, I’d pour my uncensored thoughts and emotions into my journal. Then I’d meet up with the rest of the single, middle-aged campers for Pilates Mat class which is the perfect warm-up for a day of aerial arts activities. This camp would attract the kinda Gen Xers that are unashamed of our super-hero fantasies and big kid energy. - [This year, Summer fun looks like...](https://kiralamb.com/this-year-summer-fun-looks-like/) - This year, Summer fun looks like... connecting with myself & my community outdoors. I’m gonna spend hours at Fort Greene Park - right near my crib - to contemplate life as I watch kids fly by on scooters with wide eyes and ear to ear grins. I’ll observe the quirky personalities of all the neighborhood dogs as they live their best off-leash life, while listening to drum circles under old majestic trees. And have long conversations with friends under the sun until it decides to set. Summer fun is music festivals, block parties, rooftop parties and reunions with old friends. - [My Favorite Summer Memory Is...](https://kiralamb.com/my-favorite-summer-memory-is/) - My favorite Summer memory is every Summer spent in NYC to study dance. I was lucky enough to train at Dance Theater of Harlem, Alvin Ailey School of Dance, and Broadway Dance Center. This small-town girl had been fascinated with the NYC dance scene since the tv show "FAME!" debuted in 1982. I dreamed of attending the "Fame!" school (LaGuardia High) and performing full-on production numbers on cafeteria tables. But my Summers spent in sweaty dance studios full of grit, discipline, and determination sufficed. I absolutely loved spending every day fully immersed in dance culture. - [My Fitness Manifesto Is...](https://kiralamb.com/my-fitness-manifesto-is/) - I am committed to a lifetime of fitness for function, fun, and adventure! I wanna pole dance when I'm sixty... jump out of a plane when I'm seventy... and zip-line through the jungles of Costa Rica when I'm eighty. #claimingit So before the weight of gravity continues to humble my ambitions any further, I'm fighting back with movement! - [I Respond to Criticism About My Body By...](https://kiralamb.com/i-respond-to-criticism-about-my-body-by/) - I respond to criticism about my body by internalizing it. I wish I had a more evolved way to deflect the sucker punches to my ego. But since I was a young dancer, I've absorbed people's words and accompanying body language like a sponge as they commented on my thighs, my complexion or whether or not I could ever become a dancer - because of my body. That whole "sticks & stones" concept is false. Words hurt. And the pain of them lingers in my subconscious, no matter how many times I rattle off "I'm rubber, you're glue!". - [I Feel Most Comfortable In My Skin When...](https://kiralamb.com/i-feel-most-comfortable-in-my-skin-when/) - I’d be lying if I didn’t admit that I’m most comfortable in my skin when I’m at my performing weight. What can I say? I’m a product of a culture and a career that celebrates specific beauty ideals. I’ve been conditioned to believe that my appearance determines my worth. That my skills and talents can be overshadowed by an appearance that doesn’t match society’s standard. That lives in my subconscious but the critical voices are loud and on auto-loop. I’m not proud of it but, yes, I’d be much more comfortable in my skin if I were at - [I Show My Body Gratitude By...](https://kiralamb.com/i-show-my-body-gratitude-by/) - I show my body gratitude by knowing her love languages: quality time and physical touch. As a dancer I’ve had an intimate relationship with my body since I was 5yo. She’s always received my focused and undivided attention. I’ve spent most of my life partnering with her in the exploration of movement; allowing my body to experience its greatest capabilities and wildest dreams. Together we built a dance and aerial arts career; performing on sets and stages around the world. And because my body has so generously allowed me to indulge in my passions, I listen carefully to her needs. - [For Me, Injury Recovery Looks & Feels Like...](https://kiralamb.com/for-me-injury-recovery-looks-feels-like/) - For me, injury recovery looks like movement. It’s Pilates with the elimination of some exercises and the modification of others. Sometimes it’s returning to pre-Pilates with deep awareness and breath. It’s paying attention to the imbalances in my powerhouse and working to correct them, even with the most subtle of movements. It’s using all the inherently corrective tools that Joseph Pilates invented to restore the body. But injury recovery is also PT, acupuncture and manual MFR treatments. - [I Respond to Injury By...](https://kiralamb.com/i-respond-to-injury-by/) - My response to injury is instant frustration and the muttering of expletives because, more often than not, I believe I could’ve prevented it. The overuse injuries, that is. Not the sudden, acute injuries like when I was an aerial artist and someone flew into the back of my head giving me a concussion. But the times when I’d “go hard” and neglect regular body maintenance. Back in the day, I’d return to stage before healing 100%. For example, I'd secure my sprained ankles with tape; and then run, jump and stomp onstage, numbed by adrenaline and endorphins. - [I Do/Don't Push Through Physical Pain Because....](https://kiralamb.com/i-do-dont-push-through-physical-pain-because/) - I don’t push through pain because I’ve done it enough to know that pain is a cautionary tale. In fact, the “No pain, no gain” mantra needs to disappear forever because it's absolutely false. Pain usually means I’m doing too much, too fast, too soon and my body is about to go on strike. But in the past, while doped up on adrenaline, endorphins and youth, I’ve ignored all the pain signals that eventually landed me in the emergency room. Multiple times. And then I was relegated to rest and a boring regiment of PT exercises which really sucked as a professional dancer whose passions and income were wrapped up in my ability to perform. - [Purpose-driven Fitness Is...](https://kiralamb.com/purpose-driven-fitness-is/) - Purpose-driven fitness is loving my body and loving myself. It’s sticking to a consistent exercise program that’s designed in alignment with my fitness goals, my current fitness level, and my learning style. But it also honors the way I love to move and feel in my body. It challenges my body enough to change it without injury. And each challenge teaches me about my ability to lean into awkwardness and self-doubt to discover what I’m capable of with consistency, time and effort. Purpose-driven fitness reveals my strength, tenacity, and resilience. - [I Prefer Gym/Home Workouts Because...](https://kiralamb.com/i-prefer-gym-home-workouts-because/) - I prefer in-studio workouts but the pandemic has gotten me accustomed to training virtually at home. I love going into a Pilates studio for private lessons because it has all the equipment I can’t fit into my apartment but is integral to the Pilates Method of training. When lockdown began, all I owned was a Gratz Low Folding Mat, a Spine Corrector and some small props. And I felt so lucky. I did RTL Mat 6 days/week and couldn’t believe how strong I got. Those 34 exercises ain’t no joke when it comes to delivering a sweaty, heart-pumping, full-body workout; especially when done in 34min. It really reinforced the value of intentional exercise, repetition, and moving your joints through their full ranges of motion. - [I Prefer Personal Training/Group Classes Because...](https://kiralamb.com/i-prefer-personal-training-group-classes-because/) - I prefer personal training or, as we call it in Pilates - private lessons. Why? Because I like a lot of attention! But it’s not an ego thing. I simply benefit more from a training program designed specifically for me and what my body needs in order to advance my practice - safely, effectively, and strategically. Private lessons ensure that I’m being challenged appropriately and getting direct feedback and modifications whenever necessary. Plus one-on-one lessons are an opportunity for me to ask all of my burning Pilates questions and work on specific exercises or movement patterns that challenge me the most. I can’t do that in the context of a group class because I have to play nice and share my teacher’s attention. - [Setting Fitness Goals Is Important to Me Because....](https://kiralamb.com/setting-fitness-goals-is-important-to-me-because/) - Setting fitness goals is important to me because it’s hard to create any type of lifestyle habit without a compelling reason for it. I prioritize exercise because mobility and longevity are important to me and I want to be as active as I can, for as long as possible. If I forget my “why?” there are a gazillion other things that can overrun my schedule and take priority; even a Netflix binge. - [My Fitness Goals Are...](https://kiralamb.com/my-fitness-goals-are/) - My primary fitness goal is to simply keep moving and feeling comfortable in my body. For me, comfortable means “athletic”; constantly challenging what I’m physically capable of. Plus, exercise energizes me, inspires my creativity, sparks my productivity and puts me in a much better mood. And it makes me a more confident and better version of myself. That alone is #goals - [I Know I've Had a Good Workout When...](https://kiralamb.com/i-know-ive-had-a-good-workout-when/) - I know I’ve had a good Pilates workout when the 55min fly by, I feel crazy energized and my mood shifts from #FML to “anything is possible”. I suddenly feel super-productive; as if I can check everything off of my to-do list. And my body…? It feels about ten years younger. The creaking from decades of wear and tear compounded by our new Zoom culture evaporates with the sweat. My joints feel like they’ve got space to move freely and easily, as my mood thrives on all the feel-good hormones pumping through my system. - [I Need a Teacher/Fitness Coach That...](https://kiralamb.com/i-need-a-teacher-fitness-coach-that/) - I need a Pilates teacher who can give it to me straight, with no chaser. I happen to prefer my Pilates authentic. I also need a teacher who can look at me and see possibility versus limitation. I may be in my 50s and 10yrs deep into my dance retirement with residual “stuff” going on in my body; but I still have the mind of an athlete that likes to push and challenge myself. So I tend to thrive with teachers who are adept at teaching students, like me, who want to do more than just workout, sweat, and check it off my to-do list. I don’t wanna pay to plateau. I wanna train! - [I'm Most Comfy in Workout Spaces Where...](https://kiralamb.com/im-most-comfy-in-workout-spaces-where/) - I feel most comfortable in workout environments where people take training seriously without taking themselves too seriously. Where people can be competitive with themselves without being competitive with others. I prefer workout environments that foster body/mind/movement awareness and progressive training. But, with a sense of exploration and play. Like, gimme space to figure out how my body works, what feels good, and why so I can translate that into my everyday life. Oh, and the emotional space to laugh at myself versus berate myself if I don’t get it right away. Because I will, eventually! I find it pointless and boring to grunt mindlessly through exercises just to “feel the burn”, feel "tortured” or watch an instructor live out their performance fantasies - even if they have a banging playlist. - [I'm Unmotivated by Fitness Slogans That...](https://kiralamb.com/im-unmotivated-by-fitness-slogans-that/) - because the masses are rejecting their dogma. We resist the idea that exercise is a necessary punishment for the reflection we see in the mirror. We know and believe that exercise isn’t just about whittling our body down to a certain shape and size so that it's worthy of feeling seen, loved, and sexy. Like, can't we simply workout to feel good? Can't we workout ‘cause we wanna feel like a super-heroes; even in our middle-aged bodies? - [If I Could Gain 1 Superpower Via Exercise, I'd Want...](https://kiralamb.com/if-i-could-gain-1-superpower-via-exercise-id-want/) - If I could gain one superpower via exercise, I'd wanna teleport like Nightcrawler. I mean, how badass would that be? But that’s more mental than physical, right? So I guess I’d “settle”for Wolverine’s strength, speed, stamina, durability, agility, dexterity, and reaction time. Plus his keen senses and regenerative skills! Believe it or not, having super-hero aspirations is a major motivator behind my regular exercise routine. I mean, who doesn’t wanna feel ageless and invincible? - [My Favorite Way to Exercise is...](https://kiralamb.com/my-favorite-way-to-exercise-is/) - You’d never know it by current life but my favorite way to exercise is to dance. Albert Einstein said “dancers are the athletes of god” and I wholeheartedly agree. Dance is a full-body workout that requires skill, technique, strength, flexibility, grace, imagination, and vulnerability. And while it requires extreme athleticism, it somehow doesn’t feel like a “workout” because it’s also creative self-expression. - [It's Hard to Stick to a Fitness Routine When....](https://kiralamb.com/its-hard-to-stick-to-a-fitness-routine-when/) - It’s hard to stick to a fitness routine when I don’t make it a consistent, non-negotiable item on my calendar. It’s crazy how quickly life can disrupt my workout plans, no matter how important physical fitness is to me or how much I love the way I feel post-workout. And when I say “life”, that can sometimes mean scrolling social media or binge-watching House Hunters on HGTV. “Procrastination is the thief of time” and an energy zapper. Yep, even though I’m a fitness professional that loves to move - on most days - I’m not in the mood to workout. - [Physical Fitness is Important to Me Because...](https://kiralamb.com/physical-fitness-is-important-to-me-because/) - Physical fitness is important to me because I’ve witnessed the effects of a sedentary life. Physical decline seems to spiral into mental and emotional decline. And I’ve observed what it looks like when you let life happen instead of moving through it with purpose, a sense of adventure, and self-care. But, I’ve also seen what aging can look like if you continue to 1. move your body and 2. nurture your body. It adds quality years to your life. I want that! I have students up to 80 years old; some of whom are doing advanced Pilates work! It’s no surprise that they also also have active lives. - [To Me, Physical Fitness Is...](https://kiralamb.com/to-me-physical-fitness-is/) - I know I’m under the heavy influence of Joseph Pilates but I’ve gotta agree with his statement that “Physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness”. My fitness level is so deeply tied to my emotional state because, without my health and mobility, I couldn’t do the things that I love with “zest and pleasure” (also Joe’s words). I’m a mover by nature. A dancer. An aerialist. A performer. A Pilates practitioner. And, anyone that knows me, knows that I’ve still got super-hero aspirations. Call it mid-life crisis. I call it optimism. - [In 10yrs I Want My Body to Feel...](https://kiralamb.com/in-10yrs-i-want-my-body-to-feel/) - In 10 years I’ll be 62 and I want my body to feel like a goddamn superhero! But that’s been my goal since I was 10 years old. I never wanna give up that dream or aspirational mindset because it keeps me active. And it motivates me to prioritize movement, even on days when sloth feels like the preferred option. My super-hero fantasies, although child-like, motivate me to push myself toward even greater pain-free mobility. This is why Pilates is my jam! It's not designed for status quo mentality. It’s designed for people like me who want to keep getting stronger, more flexible, more agile and more powerful. - [Physical Signs of Aging Make Me Feel...](https://kiralamb.com/physical-signs-of-aging-make-me-feel/) - Physical signs of aging make me feel like time is of the essence. They remind me that life is not infinite, and so I should avoid spending it on the couch scrolling social media, binging Netflix or simply dreaming about all of the things on my bucket list. I want to be in the present moment and savor whatever makes me come alive. I mean, there's still so much I want to see, do, and experience in this lifetime. The aging process also makes me curious and, honestly, a lil’ nervous about how the next few decades will alter my appearance. This quote about aging from Joseph Pilates always cracks me up: “As we mature, we find ourselves living in bodies not always complimentary to our ego”. - [What Reinforces My Negative Body Image Is...](https://kiralamb.com/what-reinforces-my-negative-body-image-is/) - Something that reinforces my negative body image is the loop of negative memories I hold onto. They’re always on standby for any moment that might trigger self-loathing. When that happens, my brain - on auto-pilot - hits “play”; and once that loop gets going, the pause button is hard to access. I am my own worst enemy. Compounding that is the fact that, as a dancer, I spent my most formative years having my weight and body type scrutinized and criticized. And that bled into my professional dance career. - [To Me, Body Confidence Is...](https://kiralamb.com/to-me-body-confidence-is/) - To me, “body confidence” is… owning my strength, power, & resilience as much as I embrace my vulnerability, softness, sensuality. It’s feeling curious and inspired by my body’s potential, adaptability, and mobility. It’s celebrating its ability to explore the world through my senses, learn new skills, and constantly regenerate through nurturing lifestyle habits. It’s gratitude for my body’s intuitive abilities to facilitate empowerment and healing in others through Pilates and massage therapy. - [When I Look In the Mirror I See...](https://kiralamb.com/when-i-look-in-the-mirror-i-see/) - At the most superficial level, when I look in the mirror I see the aging process at work. As I gaze at my 51yo self, I see decades worth of reflections flash before me: each era staring back as a reminder of what’s shaped me. I see… the negative voices from my childhood about my appearance that cultivated my own negative self-talk… being a dark-skinned Black girl in a predominantly White town with a love of Classical ballet where no one looked like me either... - [Society's Fitness Ideals Make Me Feel...](https://kiralamb.com/societys-fitness-ideals-make-me-feel/) - meant to be me. And f**k me for choosing careers that are so driven by aesthetics! In hindsight, it feels both foolish and brave after growing up with all the verbal and non-verbal messaging that I wasn’t the “right type” to pursue my dreams. I knew that being called “healthy” wasn’t a compliment and that my “thick thighs” would always stand between me and a dance career. And in the world of entertainment, hardly anyone looked like me! But I did it anyway. - [I Nurture My Body By...](https://kiralamb.com/i-nurture-my-body-by/) - I nurture my body by being a self-care junkie. But here's the real story: I've finally learned to listen to my body after years of ignoring all the warning signs that she'd had enough of this "wild child". I believed I was invincible. She was on the verge of going kaput. My response? Adrenaline plus ice. But there ain't enough feel-good hormones or analgesics to sustain the highly physical careers I've chosen. My body had to sit me down multiple times - in the form of injury - and hand me ultimatums. - [Some of My Body's Coolest Abilities Are..](https://kiralamb.com/some-of-my-bodys-coolest-abilities-are/) - Some of my body's coolest abilities are... 1. its ability to do cool physical shit 2. its ability to keep getting stronger no matter how old I am 3. its ability to heal I've been highly physical since I was a kid. I was of the "stay outside til the street lamps come on" generation. I'd return home "smellin' like the outdoors" after riding bikes, climbing trees, playing kickball, and building forts with the neighborhood kids. But this musty wild child also fell in love with her Royal Academy of Dancing Classical ballet training. - [I Am Grateful For My Body Because...](https://kiralamb.com/i-am-grateful-for-my-body-because/) - I'm grateful for my body because, through her, I've been able to explore my greatest passions; dance, aerial arts, and fitness. And ultimately turn them into careers! My body thrives on the discipline of skill building and discovering what I'm capable of. When it comes to training, I never get bored of the cycle of repetition and growth, no matter how long it takes to reach my goal. That journey feels like play to me. - [I Am Contributing to Healing the Racial Divide By...](https://kiralamb.com/i-am-contributing-to-healing-the-racial-divide-by/) - I am contributing to healing the racial divide by standing proudly in my authentic self; knowing that my life alone defies most people’s expectations when they see my skin. I remember how growing up in a predominantly white college town, I was confused by what it meant to “act”, and “sound” Black. I felt the burden of expectations that were all too foreign to me. But the little Black girl in the mirror didn’t seem “Black enough”. That confusion seems strange since - [Black Stereotypes Are Destructive Because...](https://kiralamb.com/black-stereotypes-are-destructive-because/) - Black stereotypes are destructive because they’re connected to racism and discrimination. They insidiously form your unconscious biases that are reflected in your assumptions, beliefs and attitudes toward us as Black people. Not only do stereotypes strip away our individuality and our true character, but they rob us of access and opportunities that we rightfully deserve. - [A Modern Black History-Maker I'd Like to Meet Is...](https://kiralamb.com/a-modern-black-history-maker-id-like-to-meet-is/) - I’d love to meet Ava Duvernay because, to me, she’s a modern-day Black activist who uses her gifts as a filmmaker to create social impact. Weaved throughout her work are the poignant realities of the Black experience within a racist and patriarchal society. And the ongoing injustices that effect us individually and collectively for the sake of political and financial profit. Whether it’s her Netflix documentary “13th”, her docu-series “When They See Us” or her novel-based drama, “Queen Sugar”, Ava uses the realm of entertainment to educate and inspire people to reflect honestly about the abuses of power in this country. - [A Black Historical Figure I'd Like to Chat With is...](https://kiralamb.com/a-black-historical-figure-id-like-to-chat-with-is/) - I’d love to chat with my late grandfather, Arthur C Lamb. He died in 1988, the same year I graduated from HS. I only have a few childhood memories of him. Mostly that we called him “Dear” & that during our infrequent trips to Baltimore, he’d indulge the family in a game of Scrabble (still my favorite board game). I also remember him as a stoic man of few words. It wasn’t until, years after he died, that I realized just how much we have in common! I so badly wish we could chat because I’m sure he’d be a great storyteller. Like me, Dear was educated in predominantly White schools. But... - [Something I Love About Black Culture Is...](https://kiralamb.com/something-i-love-about-black-culture-is/) - One of the many things I love about my culture is that, collectively, we know our worth and will never stop fighting for political, social and economic equity. We are the original activists. From subjugation, violent oppression, and institutional racism we have led the journey toward progress by birthing leaders, ideas and opportunities for us and others. We are resilient visionaries and social justice warriors. - [Race is a Challenging Topic Because...](https://kiralamb.com/race-is-a-challenging-topic-because/) - ace, racism, and discrimination is different. So it’s important to listen, even when things get uncomfortable. For some it stirs up SHAME, GUILT, or DENIAL while, for others, FRUSTRATION, ANGER and EMOTIONAL EXHAUSTION. I remember when a Pilates student of mine casually declared that racism didn’t exist anymore. My blood instantly boiled before leaving my body. My brain filled with expletives and a gazillion snarky responses. But ... - [Black History Month Is...](https://kiralamb.com/black-history-month-is/) - Black history has never been separate from US history. We are integral to it. We’ve lost so much, been denied so much and fought for so much. We’ve survived so much, overcome so much, and achieved so much. So, for a mere 28 days, it behooves us to pause and assess our own personal understanding of Black history, the impact it’s had on the U.S., its institutions, and our beliefs about Black people. The more we ignore accurate history, the more we get buried in its trenches & progress never happens. - [S.I.T. Day 31: My Bucket List Bae](https://kiralamb.com/s-i-t-day-31-my-bucket-list-bae/) - In 2022 I’m gonna fall in love. Das da bucket list, baby! Yep, I’ma throw that out into the Universe but also clarify - ‘cause y’gotta do that with the Universe sometimes. I will not “settle” into love. Nor will I “fall” in the dizzying sense that obscures all the red flags. Those are life lessons I’ve failed and repeated too many times. I’ve finally graduated from messy, toxic love and situationships. And please rest assured, I’ve done lots of self-reflection, personal growth sh*t and deem myself a constant work in progress toward the best version of myself. Nevertheless, I love the here and now version of myself! So #sheready! I’m ready for that grown and sexy kinda love.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ - [S.I.T. Day 30: Happiness Is...](https://kiralamb.com/s-i-t-day-30-happiness-is/) - Five things that make me happy? Easy-peasy. 1.) Learning/Teaching: When it comes to learning, I'm like a 2yr old who constantly asks "why?". Not to be a brat but, if I'm intrigued by something, a superficial overview simply ain't enough. I got questions. I wanna dig deeper. I wanna understand the nuances. And the more I understand something, the more excited I get about sharing it with others. And that's why I love teaching so much. I love the challenge of finding effective ways to communicate concepts, ideas and skills to others; especially in ways that inspire curiosity and excitement in them too. - [S.I.T. Day 29: I Am Not a Super-Hero](https://kiralamb.com/s-i-t-day-29-i-am-not-a-super-hero/) - As much as I've always wanted to be a super-hero, I will love myself better by remembering that I am not, in fact, super-human. That I'm actually powered by rest, food, oxygen; water, a clean & healthy environment, touch; movement and personal space to recharge. When I maintain those power sources, I am capable of extraordinary things because I have energy, strength, emotional balance, and mental clarity. I've learned the hard way that caffeine and adrenaline aren't lasting power sources. - [S.I.T. Day 28: Rest, Nurture, & Connect](https://kiralamb.com/s-i-t-day-28-rest-nurture-connect/) - I started upgrading my self-care during the holidays with REST. Like, the stay in bed all day kinda rest. Like, the Netflix, nap and repeat kinda rest. Over the past two years I've been highly productive but also overworked, full of anxiety and totally depleted. My weekends? Gone. My 2hr bi-monthly manual MFR treatments? Gone. My sanity? Gone. What did stay consistent was my Pilates routine. Five days per week! That's the glue that held me together; physically and mentally. That, plus journaling. But even that suffered. And when I'm not journaling, it's usually because I'm avoiding the truth of my current emotional state. - [S.I.T. Day 27: The Kinda People I Dig](https://kiralamb.com/s-i-t-day-27-the-kinda-people-i-dig/) - I'm focusing on relationships that feel authentic and expansive. The kinda relationships where we can show up 100% ourselves and still feel loved. Fabulous or messy. Winning or losing. We lean in, listen, support and encourage each other through the best and worst of times. We know the backstories of each other's lives. The ones that shape our opinions, beliefs, and choices. Compassion and understanding live here. We respect our differences, and have fun exchanging our own unique perspectives on just about any topic under the sun. Our relationship is uncensored but respectful, full of forgiveness (when needed) and love. - [S.I.T. Day 26: Money Goals](https://kiralamb.com/s-i-t-day-26-money-goals/) - I know I wanna keep diversifying my income streams with in-studio and virtual Pilates, plus writing and speaking opportunities. But here's the thing: whereas I'm usually really clear about my career vision, the pandemic has made my dreams a little blurry. I'm in limbo. Like, I know what I wanna be when I grow up and why. But I'm not so sure about the "how" anymore because the world has changed and so have I. Nevertheless, I trust the "how" will come as I keep leaning into curiosity and saying yes to unexpected opportunities despite the internal voices telling me I'm not "______ enough". - [S.I.T. Day 24: My Core Values](https://kiralamb.com/s-i-t-day-24-my-core-values/) - I believe that authenticity is the foundation for everything. I've gotta feel comfortable in my own skin; knowing who I am, what I believe, and what I stand for. Plus what I want, need, and desire to feel successful and fulfilled. And those things shift because life lessons build wisdom, life circumstances show me the impact of choice, and relationships serve as mirrors. So it requires constant self-awareness. But without being grounded in my truth, I have no integrity or sense of direction. And as someone who was raised in a cult, with a value and belief system forced upon me, I know how disempowering that feels. Because I was raised in a high control religion, I believe - [S.I.T. Day 25: My Version of Success](https://kiralamb.com/s-i-t-day-25-my-version-of-success/) - Success, to me, starts with a strong self-identity; knowing who I am independent of familial, religious or societal expectations. It's knowing my core values and maintaining integrity to them in any environment. Success is quieting all the mental chatter and being still enough to hear my intuition. And then make choices in alignment with it. It's also being able to recognize how the consequences of my choices reflect my strengths and weaknesses. And using those experiences as a catalyst for personal growth. - [S.I.T. Day 23: To Be Bilingual - Again](https://kiralamb.com/s-i-t-day-23-to-be-bilingual-again/) - As soon as I hear the word "accomplish" I think of my career. How narrow minded! Because, inside I know, there's so much more to life than building a successful career. So it forces me to ask myself, "How else am I spending my time?". I don't want my life to feel so linear. I want it to feel adventurous, exploratory, creative, and as spontaneous as my introverted self can handle. Most of all, I want to create rich experiences for myself. So, what do I wanna accomplish by 2023? I want to REGAIN MY FLUENCY IN SPANISH and return to Mexico for an extended period of time. - [S.I.T. Day 22: Support Local Businesses](https://kiralamb.com/s-i-t-day-22-support-local-businesses/) - In 2022 I will do a much better job at supporting small businesses because the economic wealth gap in this country is terrifying to me. Call me naive but, I still wanna believe in the American Dream. I still want to believe that ownership and upward mobility can be possible for anyone with innovative ideas, vision and determination. But over the decades I've watched NYC, one of the most spectacular cities in the world, systematically devolve into Every City, USA. Once characterized by distinct boroughs with unique neighborhoods, New York has become overrun by big box stores, chain restaurants, banks, and CVS pharmacies. It's losing its charm and character as small businesses and mom & pop shops can't withstand NY's exorbitant rents. Nor can they compete with the one-stop-shopping of, say, Target or the ease of doorstep delivery from Amazon Prime; - [S.I.T. Day 21: Connecting With My Inner-Child](https://kiralamb.com/s-i-t-day-21-connecting-with-my-inner-child/) - In 2022 I will connect with my INNER-CHILD whose been buried beneath extreme adulting. She's itching to crawl out of her dark hiding space to get curious about the world again, explore her creativity, and discover new social hobbies. I miss "Keex", the infinitely more fun, loquacious, and physically expressive version of myself. Right now I feel like a boring old fuddy-duddy. To me, reconnecting with my inner-child means temporarily detaching myself from expectations, responsibilities, and accomplishments. It's about exploring the depths of my personality and the spectrum of possibility. - [S.I.T. Day 20: The Great Outdoors for Mental Health, & Vitamin D](https://kiralamb.com/s-i-t-day-20-the-great-outdoors-for-mental-health-vitamin-d/) - Never in a gazillion years did I ever think that this was #goals but... I'm going to make it a habit of going outside everyday. The pandemic shifted my life to the confines of my apartment where I teach Pilates - virtually. I take Pilates and Spanish lessons - virtually. And I get my arts and culture - virtually. And if I'm too lazy to go grocery shopping, it's Seamless.com to the rescue! I only need to go outside on Tuesdays and Thursdays because I recently started renting space at a Pilates studio to teach a limited number of students. This is the polar opposite of my pre-pandemic life. - [S.I.T. Day 19: Savoring Choices, Successes, & Memories](https://kiralamb.com/s-i-t-day-19-savoring-choices-successes-memories/) - I will forever savor the power of choice and independent thinking that freed me from a life that felt small and inauthentic. And the depth of wisdom I've gained from ignored intuition, poor choices, and failed relationships. I'll also savor friendships, old and new, that are based upon mutual love, compassion, truth, and respect. The friends who will pull me out of perpetual work-mode and force me into play-mode, only to remember "Oh yeah, I used to be fun!". The friends who call me out when a sista needs to be checked, who listen when I need to be heard, and hold me up when I need to be supported. - [S.I.T. Day 18: Nurturing My Inner-Peace](https://kiralamb.com/s-i-t-day-18-nurturing-my-inner-peace/) - In 2022, my biggest priority is to nurture my mental health so I can live the fullest and most vibrant expression of myself. My inner-strength, inner-confidence, & inner-peace are non-negotiable at this point. They'll no longer sit on the back burner while I give every ounce of my soul to my career with a mix of relentless ambition and fear-based survival mode. F**kcovid and f**k past experiences that have molded me into the work robot that I am. I see you and rebuke you! I'll also avoid toxic relationships or conversations that weigh heavily on my spirit and fill me with anxiety. - [S.I.T. Day 17: My Pursuit of Living - Fully](https://kiralamb.com/s-i-t-day-17-my-pursuit-of-living-fully/) - A birds-eye view of my life would indicate that I only care about work and Pilates. And I just so happen to teach Pilates for a living, so my life appears to be rather monotone and unbalanced. It is. Thank god I love teaching, studying, and practicing the Method! But my other interests got squeezed out by Covid shutdowns, my relentless work schedule, and - the real culprit - anxiety. Once my personal and professional life became confined to my NYC apartment, my spirit simply shut down and I went into survival mode. So in 2022 I plan to pursue some of my former passions, because I know I deserve to live more than just this abbreviated version of myself. - [S.I.T. Day 16: A Community of Women](https://kiralamb.com/s-i-t-day-16-a-community-of-women/) - In 2022 I'd like to experience a LIVE COMMUNITY of driven, passionate, woman-identifying entrepreneurs who are committed to building their businesses, serving their communities, and building each other up. Will that ever happen again? It just feels so motivating to be in the presence of like-minded women who exchange ideas, insights, and expertise. And to know you've got other women in your corner to help you problem-solve or support you with their own unique skills, perspectives and backgrounds. And it feels equally good to pay it forward. - [S.I.T. Day 15: Write Like a Pro](https://kiralamb.com/s-i-t-day-15-write-like-a-pro/) - In 2022 I want to learn more about the craft of writing. I first fell in love with writing in Mr. Craig's 5th grade class. He had a way of making words feel like colorful puzzle pieces that, when thoughtfully constructed, created pictures so vivid they'd transport me into a world far more adventurous than my own. Like dance, writing became a portal into my dreamworld. I needed that as a kid growing up in a high control religion because I had to suppress so much of who I was. - [S.I.T. Day 14: Channeling Inner-Peace](https://kiralamb.com/s-i-t-day-14-channeling-inner-peace/) - In 6 months I want to feel more... INNER-PEACE. I've started cultivating this for myself already, but I definitely foresee the journey ahead. The last couple of years have stirred up so much anxiety that my insides are constantly vibrating with nervous energy. It's the same kinda nerves I used to get when performing a solo aerial act in an Off-Broadway show. No biggie. Just the element of danger and five hundred pair of eyes - all on me - in the spotlight! This perfectionist dreads the spotlight and my "inner-nuisance" knows it. And so she'd taunt me. - [S.I.T. Day 4: A Sad Goodbye to My Dog](https://kiralamb.com/s-i-t-day-4-a-sad-goodbye-to-my-dog/) - My most sobering moment in 2021 was watching my 17 year old Boston Terrier decline, and making the heart-wrenching decision to let her go on 12/13; peacefully and compassionately, at home and in my arms. And even though I knew I was doing the most loving thing for her, there was something about making that decision that felt completely unfair. I mean, who am I to decide her fate? But she was ready. We both knew she was ready. And so we cuddled endlessly, clinging to every moment together, until she fell asleep forever. - [S.I.T. Day 5: Buh-bye 24hr News Cycle](https://kiralamb.com/s-i-t-day-5-buh-bye-24hr-news-cycle/) - The best decision I made to protect my sanity was giving up the 24hr news cycle to live in a bubble of blissful ignorance. Sad but true. But I could no longer handle the onslaught of click-bait headlines and graphic imagery of violent racist attacks, repeated injustices in our criminal justice system, school shootings; Covid deaths, overwhelmed hospitals & healthcare workers, conspiracy theories; corporate greed, global warming and the global spread of political polarization. As a highly sensitive person, every headline felt like a personal attack on my soul. It tangled me into a a tight ball of chronic anxiety in ways I've never experienced before. - [S.I.T. Day 6: Sister-Friends & Self-Care Rituals](https://kiralamb.com/s-i-t-day-6-sister-friends-self-care-rituals/) - There's this "strong Black woman" trope that hovers over me like an unmet expectation. Yes I am a strong, powerful, and resilient Black woman. I was even raised to project that image. But sometimes a sista gotta feel her feels and fall apart. I need the time and space to give into the tears, fears, and frustrations without pretending like I've got my sh*t together all the time. 'Cause I don't! I need a safe space for vulnerability, realness, and honesty. And for that, I treasure my sister-friends and my self-care rituals; deep and meaningful connections with a select few and my (higher)self. That's where I got my support in 2021. - [S.I.T. Day 7: New Tech & Screen Time](https://kiralamb.com/s-i-t-day-7-new-tech-screen-time/) - What depleted me the most in 2021 was NAVIGATING NEW TECH and TOO MUCH SCREEN TIME! When my 3-dimensional Pilates and massage therapy biz needed to survive this global pandemic; like many, I fled to the 2-dimensional territory of cyberspace. And because tech is not my "gift", every day feels like a punch-the-screen, “WTF?” kind - [S.I.T. Day 8: Cult-raised Perfectionist](https://kiralamb.com/s-i-t-day-8-cult-raised-perfectionist/) - I’m leaving behind the limiting beliefs that “I am not __________ enough“. You could fill in the blank with damn near any adjective and I’ve probably said it to myself a gazillion times. Let's just say, when you're raised in a cult, you grow these oversized fears of making mistakes or not measuring up to ridiculous puritanical standards, lest you be shunned by your family and the only community you know. That threat is scary and real! There was this constant feeling that big brother was watching. And "he" was. - [S.I.T. Day 9: Personal & Professional Growth in a Pandemic](https://kiralamb.com/s-i-t-day-9-personal-professional-growth-in-a-pandemic/) - What's going well in my life right now is that, despite the pandemic's chokehold on life as we knew it, I have continued to grow personally and professionally. And I am so freaking grateful for that because life has kinda felt like a crap shoot since March 2020. But, living during a pandemic has distilled my priorities; making it far more clear who and what is important in my life and why. It's fomented my need for connection, intimacy, creativity, learning, and self-care rituals for body, mind, and spirit. And I've actually responded to those needs instead of putting them off because I'm "too busy". Granted, I've been able to (had to) meet those needs from the comfort and convenience of my home but, hey, I'm doin' it! - [S.I.T. Day 10: Dreams, Inspiration, Connection, & Self-Expression](https://kiralamb.com/s-i-t-day-10-dreams-inspiration-connection-self-expression/) - Personally, I want more social proximity and hugs, damnit! I want more intimate gatherings in cozy spaces with good conversations. More time in dimly lit lounges with a live DJ so I can "leave it on the dance floor" and exit a hot, sweaty mess. I want more Afro-Caribbean dance classes with live drummers and to wind my hips a bit differently in pole dance classes that transport me back to my days as an aerial artist. And then I wanna sit in a crowded Brooklyn coffee shop; banging out ideas on my laptop while the energy of other people's creativity pulses around me. I want more opportunities to travel to Spanish-speaking countries to explore, meet new people, and continue improving my Spanish-speaking abilities. I miss all these strong energy zones fueled by dreams, inspiration, connection, and self-expression. - [S.I.T. Day 11: Aging is a B*tch!](https://kiralamb.com/s-i-t-day-11-aging-is-a-btch/) - Y'know what I want less of in my life? AGING! There, I said it. Oh, I want all fifty-one years of experience I've accumulated and the wisdom that comes from life lessons and the power of choice. And I ain't givin' up this feeling of sitting in my own skin, all comfy-lomfy; living boldly and audaciously with zero f**ks given. And I'll never retreat to my former people-pleasing self, either. I'ma continue basking in all this vulnerability and authenticity; feelin' like Maya Angelou "phenomenal woman, that's me." What I want less of, though, is... - [S.I.T. Day 12: My Kinda People](https://kiralamb.com/s-i-t-day-12-my-kinda-people/) - I'm attracting people into my life who aren't afraid to live outside the veil of their persona. They welcome relationships grounded in authenticity, vulnerability, and truth. My spirit absolutely swells during those "get to know you" kinda conversations where curiosity leads to communication, which leads to understanding and trust - a foundation for real friendship. As a highly sensitive introvert, I recoil at the sound of small-talk. But I come alive during conversations that challenge me to think deeper, experience different perspectives, or completely change my mind. I love spending time with people who are open to sharing their ideas, opinions, dreams, fears and failures. I mean, who doesn't wanna feel seen, valued, heard and supported? - [S.I.T. Day 13: Physical & Mental Rest](https://kiralamb.com/s-i-t-day-13-physical-mental-rest/) - I'm making my life easier by: Managing my expectations about what's humanly possible in a day, a week, a month, a year (and a lifetime). I have undiagnosed Restless Mind Syndrome. Is that even a thing? All I know is that my mind is always buzzing with ideas that "deserve" my immediate attention. But they actually don't. I'm not saying they're not good ideas. They just don't all have to happen - today! There's something about being a big dreamer and facing Act 2 of my life that makes everything feel so imperative, though. So to avoid overwhelm, my new strategy is, slow the f**k down and actually implement a strategy for accomplishing my goals. Go figure! - [S.I.T. Day 3: Stillness at Rancho La Puerta](https://kiralamb.com/s-i-t-day-3-stillness-at-rancho-la-puerta/) - My most exhilarating experience in 2021 started with an N95 mask, a face shield, a cross-country flight and a bus ride across the Mexican border. My destination? Rancho La Puerta, where I was the Guest Pilates Instructor for 1 week. Yes, it was a work trip. But the Ranch always makes sure I'm blissfully cared for. - [S.I.T. Day 2: F**K Unhealthy Fear!](https://kiralamb.com/s-i-t-day-2-fk-unhealthy-fear/) - Something I learned about myself in 2021 is that, in some areas of my life, I still operate from a place of unhealthy fear. And when I operate from that space, I make unhealthy choices for myself. Ironically, FEAR is one of my greatest motivators. I'm an aerial artist that's afraid of heights, for god's sake! - [S.I.T. Day 1: Play Harder!](https://kiralamb.com/s-i-t-day-1-play-harder/) - PLAY! That's it. That's my theme word for 2022. Why? Because Covid has turned me into a middle-aged recluse who's grown quite content in the bubble of her diminutive NYC apartment. Becoming a couch-potato in overpriced athleisure-wear has become my default mode, despite my inner-child's guttural scream, "Let me ouuut!" - [Pilates: The Original Lifestyle Brand](https://kiralamb.com/pilates-lifestyle-brand/) - Ever since my last post, I've been thinking a lot about Joseph Pilates' legacy. I mean, if he hadn't crafted such an impactful one, I might be a yoga teacher writing about Tirumali Krishnamacharya instead of a Pilates teacher writing about Joe. But he did build a strong legacy. In fact, every time I re-read - [Budgeting Pilates in Today's Economy](https://kiralamb.com/pilates-practice-todays-economy/) - Pilates certainly feels good, but is it practical in today's economy? I say - if you value your physical, mental, and emotional health - absolutely! I can personally attest to the fact that Pilates often interrupts the anxiety triggered by feelings of uncertainty, news headlines, and my own Facebook feed. Plus, a good workout always - [On Finding Sanity in Times of COVID & Civil Unrest](https://kiralamb.com/on-finding-sanity-in-times-of-covid-civil-unrest/) - After more than three months of sheltering in place in NYC, any modicum of sanity to which I’m desperately clinging comes from a consistent and scheduled Pilates practice. No lies. Now I totally understand that, as a Pilates teacher, this sounds SO frigging cliche and probably deserves a side eye and twisty lips. But let - [Why Joseph Pilates' Legacy Will Live Forever](https://kiralamb.com/joseph-pilates-legacy-will-live-forever/) - Joseph Pilates' legacy includes a lifetime of developing and teaching exercise to a wide range of clients. He trained injured dancers, professional athletes, and opera singers; to businessmen, kids with scoliosis, and even breast cancer survivors. And within that process, he invented a cohesive exercise system and specific equipment for physical and mental conditioning. Meanwhile, he - [Becoming a Pilates Influencer](https://kiralamb.com/becoming-a-pilates-influencer/) - If Joseph Pilates were alive today, I bet his Instagram feed would be lit! I mean, even back in the early 20th century Joe was meticulously documenting his life's work; clearly aware of how to appeal to the masses by showcasing his Contrology- chiseled body in nothing but white skivvies. And let's not forget the - [Pilates & the Myth of the Dancer's Body](https://kiralamb.com/pilates-the-myth-of-the-dancers-body/) - My first introduction to Pilates was at 13yo at Dance Theater of Harlem where it was a required part of my training during Summer intensives. I had no inkling whatsoever that, almost 20yrs later, teaching Pilates would become my profession. For many, dance is the gateway to Pilates. And then it becomes our "retirement plan" - [Are You a Contrology Freak™?](https://kiralamb.com/are-you-a-contrology-freak/) - A Contrology Freak™ is anyone obsessed with Pilates and battling uncontrollable urges to drop and do The Hundred. Joy dish detergent and 2. Pledge furniture polish. And as a kid, I dreaded all lemon-scented chores; even if they did earn me enough cash for Atomic Fire Balls and a new set of Jacks. But that cloying citrus scent still pulls - [Ginger Essential Oil: Snap Out of It!](https://kiralamb.com/ginger-essential-oil-snap-out-of-self-doubt/) - Ginger essential oil feels like an enthusiastic cheerleader with a little bounce to her step and Colgate smile. Ginger is that - [Vetiver Essential Oil - Your Truth Serum](https://kiralamb.com/vetiver-essential-oil/) - Vetiver essential oil feels persistent and unapologetic. Polyamorous because not just one EO can satisfy my physical and emotional needs. So I've been following my nose and pure chemical attraction to guide my aromatic experiences. And while I've fully absorbed myself in every sensual encounter, I never let it - [Are You Practicing Pilates Or Contrology?](https://kiralamb.com/are-you-practicing-pilates-or-contrology/) - What is Contrology? While today it's more commonly known as Pilates, Joseph Pilates actually called his exercise method Contrology. In his book, "Return To Life", he claims that "Contrology develops the body uniformly, corrects wrong postures, restores physical vitality, invigorates the mind, and elevates the spirit." Who doesn't want that? The fact that Contrology has been - [The Greatest Teacher I Never Met](https://kiralamb.com/greatest-teacher-never-met/) - Not Your Average Joe You know those people who enter your life and create a massive impact on your sense of purpose?
